The Applied Exercise  Physiology Lab

The laboratory is equipped with a MOXUS Metabolic Cart, a BodPod air displacement plethysmograph for body composition assessment, a GE ECG stress test system including a wide treadmill, a LODE Corival cycle ergometer,  Monark cycle ergometers (3), a BioRadio wireless physiologic monitor capable of assessing ECG, EMG, hand dynamometry, pulse oxymetry, temperature, spirometry and respiration in field experiments as well as under controlled conditions, Actigraph GT9X (Link) accelerometers capable of assessing sedentary behavior and body position (30), waistbands, wrist bands pouches and belt clips for the accelerometers, a Life Fitness treadmill, research grade blood pressure monitors (3), a Polar heart rate monitoring station with heart rate monitors (20), and a Polar V800 Heart rate monitor with GPS and heart rate variability functionality.

Our primary research focus is on the relationship between exercise and physical activity on cardio-metabolic disease risk factors in people living with HIV.

The specific goals of the lab are to improve cardio-autonomic function, body composition, physical and mental health, exercise capacity and physical activity participation in people living with HIV.

The laboratory is also used for major required courses, including FNES 724 Measurement of Physical Fitness and Body Composition and FNES 721 Principles of Electrocardiography & Stress Testing.

Graduate and undergraduate students also have the opportunity to engage in research projects where they perform data collection under the guidance of a faculty member.
